Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is used to treat a tooth that has become internally infected, has nerve degeneration, or requires restorative care.  The most common reason for internal infection is an untreated cavity.  Your tooth has three parts, a hard outer shell called enamel, a softer layer of dentin, and an inner core of nerves and other tissues called the pulp, which supplies nutrients and blood flow to the tooth. If a tooth experiences serious trauma or deep decay, the pulp can become infected and die. When this happens, pressure builds inside the tooth and can cause a serious toothache.

To save the tooth from extraction, Dr. Mulroy may recommend root canal therapy. During the procedure, he will remove the diseased tissue, disinfect the inside of the tooth, fill the tooth with a biocompatible material, and seal the tooth to prevent further problems. After root canal therapy, most teeth need a crown to protect the tooth and restore function.
