Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums that gradually destroy the support of your natural teeth.  Bacteria found in dental plaque is the major cause of periodontal disease.  It produces toxins or poisons that irritate the gums and cause them to turn red, swell, and bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth causing deep pockets or gum crevices. Plaque will fill thses pockets and harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus (or tartar). This can occur both above and below the gum line. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss. However, don’t be fooled. With periodontal disease, bleeding, redness, and swelling do not have to be present. Further, pain is usually not associated with periodontal disease. This disease damages the teeth, gum, and jawbone of more than 80 percent of Americans by age 45.

There is a strong link between periodontal disease and other more life threatening conditions.  Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease.  Additional studies have pointed to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke.

Periodontal Treatment

At Mulroy Family Dental we pride ourselves on approaching periodontal disease conservatively, using the least invasive measures first.  Maintaining regular hygiene appointments is crucial to creating healthy gums, and for  many patients with periodontal disease this means more frequent visits (every 3-4 months).  Patients play an important role in controlling periodontal disease.  Factors such as smoking, poor dental hygiene, diabetes, stress, clenching/grinding and some prescription medications contribute to periodontal disease.

Scaling and Root Planing is a conservative cleaning treatment that is highly effective in treating periodontal disease.  Scaling involves a deep cleaning of the tooth above and below the gum line in order to remove accumulated plaque and calculus. The root of the tooth is then planed until it is smooth. This eliminates any rough calculus deposits on the root which can provide breeding grounds for bacteria.  When the causes of the infection are removed with scaling and planing, gum tissues are allowed to heal and become healthy.  This procedure is done with the aid of local anesthetic so the patient is comfortable during the cleaning.
